Wicker Picnic Baskets

Author: Administrator Category: Wicker Baskets

What would a picnic be without wicker picnic baskets to hold your sandwiches, salads and drinks? Baskets have long been used to pack any meal you wish to eat outside, in a park or even in your own back yard. You can also take them on camping trips, of course. Filled baskets make excellent gifts for a new neighbor, a family member or a friend.

Wicker is actually one kind of a natural straw that is also used for making folding walls, tables and chairs, as well as picnic baskets. It’s made from flexible twigs or branches, generally those found in willow trees. Wicker branches or straws are laced or woven together to create a weave that it solid, light but sturdy, and a great way to transport your picnic goodies.

Most wicker baskets have a handle or two, which makes them very easy to carry. These baskets usually have enough room for not just food, but also plates, cups and flatware. If you delve into the range of luxury wicker, these baskets can hold enough food and picnic accessories for about six people. That would include six sets of flatware, along with glasses and plates, napkins and even an insulated thermos with tea or coffee for your meal. If it will be a romantic picnic, stow a bottle of wine and a corkscrew, too. The handles on heavier baskets are made with stiffer straw and are strong, since the basket will be carrying more weight.

Other wicker picnic baskets can be used to bring along the beverages and food, if the lunch will be an elegant one. You can pack sandwiches, water, meat and your choice of cut vegetables and fruits. The sturdy baskets will allow you to carry your lunch to a place under a favorite tree, in a spot to watch the sunset, or by a lovely pond.

You can still find the original and classic type of wicker baskets from various producers. They usually have one large storage area, a handle, and handy flaps that can be opened from either end. Make sure if you will be leaving your picnic food in the basket for any period of time that you use ice packs or heat packs, since wicker is not known for its thermal qualities. If you’re only traveling a short distance though, your food should be fine.

Some ornate English style wicker hampers can be used for picnics. They even have clips for your utensils and plates, and a large cloth to lay out for your food. Picnic baskets that may be more expensive include systems to help keep food and beverages hot or cold. This involves the use of insulation, though, and may make the basket heavier to carry.

If your picnic basket gets greasy from transporting foods, you can clean it by first vacuuming the inside to remove loose crumbs, and then using a cloth soaked in soapy water to clean your basket. A good solution to use is one gallon of warm water mixed with two tablespoons of a liquid detergent that has a grease-cutter. This will keep your wicker picnic baskets clean and ready for your next outing.
